Elysium - 5/10

May be the most disappointing film of the year for me. I enjoyed District 9 so much, but this movie just fell flat. I didn't care for any of the characters or feel they were acting on real motives. Even the action was a let down. Can't recommend this one on any level.

Our Sunhi (Hong Sang-soo/2013) 7/10

Our Sunhi is director Sang-soo's second film of 2013. The other one is the even better Nobody's Daughter Haewon. Although I need some more time to let this one sink in. It's not unlike a lot of Sang-soo's earlier films just somewhat shorter at 88 minutes. It's still a powerful indictment on relationships with Sang-soo's sharp attention to how real people communicate with each other. It's also very funny at times. Worth seeing.

Bells a.k.a. Murder By Phone:

As a movie: maybe 3/10 if I'm generous.
As so-bad-it's-great cheese: solid 8/10.

"I'm not doing any drugs"
"You should have said that before you drank a whole can of ecstasy."

Most quotable movie of the year.

Another thing about Bells/Murder By Phone: one scene has a woman getting electrocuted via a not-disguised-in-any-way Mickey Mouse phone that even gets its own glamour shot in the end credits. No way in hell you could do that in a commercial movie today, heck, if Disney didn't take any legal action against the film in the 1980s, it could only be due to the film's obscurity.

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai - 9/10 One of the more suspenseful movies I have seen. Not a movie I ever want to see again because of the subject matter, but I could not look away even though at times I wanted to.

Frances Ha (Noah Baumbach/2012) 6/10

Besides Greta's performance this really didn't do much for me especially coming after an excellent dialogue piece from Sang-soo. Oh well. I really liked Damsels in Distress and look forward to whatever Gerwig does next.

We are what we are (horror) 5/10 Well acted, well filmed, well directed - WAY too long and TOO 'paced'. Plus resorted in the standard 'horror' clichés right at the end.
