Ivan the TerribleI had a friend growing up. His father was American, a divorce lawyer and one of my dad's law partners, and his mother was from a wealthy Indonesian family. They had a servant from Indonesia who lived in a tiny room in the basement and seemed to basically fulfill the role Lola has in this story, doing most of the actual child raising for my friend and his brother. I never saw her outside of the house.

Kinda gives this story a weird feeling for me.

I wonder if there are slave-owning families in the U.S. that read this and went "Fuuuuuuuuck"

BigwigHe died the day The Atlantic decided to make it their cover story.

It was probably at a point where it was more or less ready to publish but not quite at the final draft. The editor's note says they worked with his family to finish it which probably means they were still fact checking and polishing the copy.

This makes sense. I thought the ending was a little flat.

How do you die of "natural causes" at 57 though?

I always thought "natural causes" was just old people dying in their sleep from some minor illness their bodies couldn't handle, or a long term condition that finally caught up with them.

I'm gonna say cancer or a voodoo curse, which is not supernatural, because I use voodoo to temper my mood and my shaman's pamphlets insist all her treatments are super natural.
