I will say this: Rey is not forever branded. You can (easily) write Superman as a Mary Sue, and you can write him as a character with the potential to be overwhelmed and defeated. I expect (or at least hope) that Rey will be more palatable in The Last Jedi with a more competent writer at the helm.

Arrival - 75

Pretty movie that doesn't really have much to say. The acting is very good and so is the direction and cinematography, but if only the script had more meat on it's bones. I liked the main theme of the movie but I felt the movie would've been better if there was more in the terms of plot. The second half is much better than the first half which didn't have to be so slow considering what it was building up to.

(Spoilers) I thought the best thing it had to say was what Zuben said was the best thing about the movie. That appreciating a life cut short is better than not appreciating the life at all. So itIt has something to say I guess but I felt considering the Sci-Fi setting and the whole issue with time it could've said a lot more? (Spoilers)

The reason I said that I could dispense with that term entirely is that the core characteristic of a Mary Sue, supreme competence, to the point where the character is unchallenged by the world she's in, is a problem with Rey that I have not seen effectively defended.

Jean, rewatch the movie. Rey's success has less to do with her own competence, and much more to do with Kylo's incompetence. There's an interesting relationship between Kylo's and Rey's arcs that you're completely missing.

Dolemite is an unfiltered, near-incomprehensible cinematic curiosity that no description can do justice. Really, it's just a series of amateurishly directed and badly acted semi-connected scenes allowing Rudy Ray Moore to showboat, rocking threads, slapping pimps, humping bitches and delivering some sweet, sweet rhymes. I'm honestly not sure how much of it is intentionally funny (some of it definitely is) but I was laughing really hard throughout. This is a good time. Nice restoration by Vinegar Syndrome.

Hadn't seen The Secret of NIMH since early childhood. Funny the little things that stick in the memory, specifically Dom Deluise's performance as Jeremy the Crow. It's not the best thing ever made but it's really nicely animated and the scoring is good. Blu-ray transfer is really grainy and occasionally blurred, but not ugly. Still has the original, dramatic UA logo, which is nice.

Got Eastbound & Down on a clearance. Watched the first episode and it's pretty funny. McBride's special brand of arseholery is impressively extreme.

I haven't seen McGruber, but I just watched the two sex scenes from the movie, and they were two of the funniest scenes I've seen in my life.

Those are good scenes but now I want to know what kind of weird pornhub searches you're doing.

Eastbound & Down is HILARIOUS. If you haven't seen Vice Principals, there are two wonderful seasons of that to watch too.
I CAN'T WAIT for McBride's (and/or Hill's) next project(s).

Wind River : 70%

A much younger, like teenage, me would probably have thought this was a cool movie. Actually, it's pretty dumb, particularly the actions/motivations of the bad guys.

McBride said in an interview I read a day or two ago that next up is another HBO series with Hill. McBride and Hill are the American version of Wright-Pegg-Frost.

This is what I would give it too. I thought it was a pretty good movie until the last act where everything kind of fell apart. I will say the acting was very good, particularly Jeremy Renner.

It's terrible. And why would you give 70% to a "dumb" movie?

YES. Weeeeee! God I hope it comes out in 2018. McBride and Hill are my new Louis CK.

Because I have a solid rating system. that is logically coherent. It's pretty dumb. For a genre movie like this, that nets about a 65-70%. That means if you are bored and have two hours to kill it's not the worst. But nothing below 80% is a recommend.

The shootout was good. Seriously though, what were the bad guys planning on doing after killing half a dozen cops and an FBI agent? I mean, they are government employees themselves and no one else is around. Are they just going to wait for more people to show up looking for the people that went missing and kill them too? It's like a boy wrote these villains. "I love rape!"?

The script was dumb, but everything else was pretty top notch. So to give it a 70 isn't a big deal.
