In reality, the Winkie's location is not Sunset Blvd. at all - the site is W El Segundo Blvd in Gardena, quite a lot further south than Sunset Blvd. The street address of the diner is probably 1020 or 1014 W El Segundo Blvd., Gardena, CA 90247.

from woodlouse's thread: Winkie's not on Sunset!

Bob,

Absolutely terrific post. Is that your own shot? Are there any from a front or backview?

To see more pictures ... I can be very bad.

Fun stuff!

Thought I would add other things we know about the real Winkie's location into this thread. It would seem that any info we have or get about other MD locations could also be added here.

First, Woodlouse reported the position of the real Winkie's along with the street addresses of some of the businesses that are visible from Winkie's.

I was able to deduce this by searching for the locations of the surrounding businesses that are visible in the shots.
The Guadalajara de Noche is 1021 W El Segundo, and at 1027 W El Segundo is the Coin Wash Laundry.

Also, the large white apartment building can be seen to the south of the location. [/Quote]

As far as the issue of what the diner was ... it appears to be a Denny's.

Not only is the Caesar's sign in the shape familiar as Denny's but the interior matches (both booths and lamps).

This was reported by CivilSavage (who is missed around these parts).

CivilSavage visited a restaurant that was originally a Denny's and then purchased and turned into a restaurant named Kristy's.

Notice the lampshades and compare to a shot that I pulled from the film.

The order of shots:

1. Fairly typical Denny's
2. Kristy's sign
3. Kristy's (old Denny's interior)
4. Winkie's lampshade

Oh man! On my next trip to LA, I have to go there! Does anyone know if the alley is behind it, or did they shoot that in a completely different place?

I asked Bob Brooker whether he had shots of the back, so far no word ...

Did somebody mention "The Making of Mulholland Drive"?

Bob: your thoughts on this bonus feature please...

Put them here:

Is the feature in French or English?
