Does anyone living in L.A. or knowing the city have any idea of the validity of Rita's walk from the accident scene to 1612 Havenhurst.

It seems to me to be a very long walk.

Further, does her route seem likely, crossing 7400 Franklin Ave.

Btw, I guess both Lynch and his "Babbo Inc." (or Cabin Bob) lives near the route, on different adresses of Senalda Road.

Locals, please enlarge!

HOLLYWOOD, THE CITY OF THE STARS
All the world knows of glamorous Hollywood, of its queens of fashion, its stars of the silver screen and radio, its world wide influence in entertainment, art, literature and music.
With a background of beatuiful foothills, and bathed in the brilliance of the California sun, Hollywood is a beautiful city. Wonderful hotels, unique theatres and cafes, charming shops,--its broad palm-lined avenues which lead the enchanted traveler to the sparkling blue of the Pacific, or towering mountain ranges.

It's a road that has been the same for many years. It goes along the top of the mountain range, the Santa Monica mountains. It separates Hollywood and Santa Monica from the Valley, what they call the Valley. And because the road is high on the mountains, and a lot of it goes through strange residential areas, rich and poor, but a lot of it is wild, you see coyotes. So there is a lot of mystery and a lot of stories coming from Mulholland Drive.
<IMG SRC="http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/2093/location/lhmulholland.jpg" WIDTH="400" HEIGHT="268">
It's a road that is locked, sort of back in time. A lot of it, anyway. And there's many places where you can overlook, you know, the Valley or Hollywood down below. And it's very dark there at night, and it's curving. It gives you a feeling it's a kind of a dream road.

Among the many stories on Mulholland Drive, we could report the perilous ones transfered that Edward Bunker carried out there. Bunker, ex-gangster who spent eighteen years in the shade of many penitentiary cells, reconverted today into the writing of novels and scenarios (Animal Factory). "the night, one made crowned races here. Several cars of face, me I had a Jaguar SK 140, tell it in connection with mad expedition that it carried out on Mulholland Drive, with the time of his life dissolue. Friends watched to block the way. Sometimes, that finished off the road "This dark version of night races unquestionably evokes a famous sequence of "Rebel Without a Cause" and finds themselves directly at the base of the first sequence of Mulholland Drive.

MULHOLLAND DRIVE (Los Angeles/Beverly Hills):

6432: MADONNA
Mulholland Highway (at Canyon Lake Drive): Madonna's former home, the "Castillo del Lago," where (on May 29, 1995) a deranged stalker scaled the wall of the estate and was shot three times in a struggle with an armed guard employed by Madonna. The stalker was later convicted and sentenced to a lengthy prison term. Earlier, another stalker had been arrested at the same Madonna estate and sentenced to a year in jail. Both men claimed to be Madonna's husband. Back in the 1930's, this terra cotta & yellow-striped house in the Hollywood Hills (just below the Hollywood sign), was an infamous gambling casino run by mobster Bugsy Siegel.

6980: ADAM KESHER

7430: ARSENIO HALL (Pyramid Place, off Mulholland)

7680: MOLLY RINGWALD

9621: CHUCK CONNORS, DAN DURYEA

12721: JOHN LENNON

12850: JACK NICHOLSON, ROMAN POLANSKI
in the Hollywood Hills: actor Jack Nicholson's house, where director Roman Polanski ("Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby") allegedly bedded a 13-year-old girl, resulting in Polanski's 1977 trial, conviction, and subsequent self-exile in Europe. (Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, and their unborn child had been murdered by the Manson gang in 1969.)

12900: MARLON BRANDO
in the Hollywood Hills: actor Marlon Brando's house, where his son, Christian Brando, shot and killed his half-sister's lover, Dag Drollet, in May of 1990. (Christian claimed the shooting was accidental, and occurred during a fight allegedly sparked because Cheyenne said Drollet was beating her) He was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His half-sister, Cheyenne, committed suicide in Tahiti in 1995. After his release from prison in January of 1996, Christian returned home to his father's estate.

13030: IDA LUPINO, JOAN FONTAINE

13511: DEMI MOORE, BBRUCE WILLIS

13671: WARREN BEATTY & ANNETTE BENING.

13741: MARY TYLER MOORE

14111: VANNA WHITE

14372: The Fast and The Furious: the circular Hollywood house with the pool, where Paul's cop buddies have set up a temporary police HQ (and which they mention is "the house Eddie Fisher built for Elizabeth Taylor"), is probably atop the Hollywood Hills, between Bel-Air and Sherman Oaks.

14527: above Sherman Oaks: the home of actor Harry Dean Stanton ("Alien" & "Repo Man"), where, on Jan. 20, 1996, he was the victim of a home invasion robbery. Stanton was held prisoner by three armed men, beaten, tied up and his car was stolen. Fortunately, his car was equipped with an electronic tracking device, and police quickly located it (near Alcove Avenue and Tiara Street, in North Hollywood) and arrested the suspects.

15147: FAYE DUNAWAY

16405: KEENAN IVORY-WAYANS

* The Skirball Center Drive exit to the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway: where actor/comedian Bill Cosby's 27-year-old son, Ennis Cosby, was shot and killed on January 16, 1997. Ennis had been heading north from West L.A. on the 405, to visit a friend in the Valley, when his car had a flat tire. It was 1:45 a.m. He pulled the car off onto the exit leading to Mulholland Drive (in the Sepulveda Pass), and while he was fixing the flat on the west shoulder of that road, just off the freeway ramp, a stranger shot and killed him for no apparent reason (perhaps during an attempted robbery). An 18-year-old wannabe gang member from Orange County, Mikail "Michael" Markhasev, was arrested for the crime, tried, found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

* Body Double: that oddball, octagonal house-on-stilts where most of the movie takes place isn't just a studio prop - it's real a real home, and it's located at 7776 Torreyson Drive, south of Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood Hills.

US 101 though Hollywood from Mulholland Drive, 1986

Within five minutes of the heart of Hollywood, beautiful Lake Hollywood nestles in the hills. Mulholland Drive skirts the shores of the lake and from the dam a commanding view of Hollywood and surroundings is revealed.

Radio Center on Sunset Boulevard is in the heart of glamorous Hollywood. On this romantic palm-fringed boulevard are located the Pacific Coast headquarters of two national broadcasting networks,--motion picture studios and offices, and nearby famous night spots, where one may dine and dance to the music of nationally famous orchestras and mingle with the film colony's celebrities.

"Sunset and Vine"--in the heart of glamorous Hollywood, is the hub of the entertainment world. At this famous intersection and nearby are located the Pacific Coast headquarters of the national broadcasting networks.

Drafted a new LA map showing Rita's walk and some nearby MD locations. I found the old map a bit confusing. Tell me if you wish something amended...

looks great

just a couple minor comments.
1. pink's is at La Brea and Melrose (i thk u had it at la brea X santa monica). it should be one large block south of your "star".
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=pink's+hot+dog,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90038-3338&ll=34.083500,-118.344300&spn=0.003693,0.006328&hl=en

2. i think SB ends at about 1899, and Havenhurst Dr. ends at 1499. we can indicate the end points at the north end of these steets. these #'s are where your red stars are in real world.
(you can then add a note explaining 1612 and 2590 are out of range next to the real street #s)
note: i just tried a few numbers in google maps to find out what are th max # of each street

...also we can note that winkie's is also at a 'fake location' (i think in the film it was indicated as on sunset, right?...i.e. the location you have in your map)
....or we can point readers to the hyperlink of your location page.

p.s. filming location for havenhurst 490 n sycamore is 2 small blocks (1 min walk) from pink's.......runs parallel to your note about how close some filming locations are in downtown area (betwen main and broadway, 4th and 6th st).

2904 is the number on the wall. It seems to be the adress number of the neighbours' home at Sierra Bonita.

Thus I suppose it means that Diane's real adress is 2905, not 2590 and that she has interwined the figures in the dream.

Bob, could you add this adress on your map, please?

1612 Havenhurst is not a real adress either. Symbolically I translate it as Diane's period of happyness with Aunt Ruth, between 12 and 16 years old, before she decided to leave her to live with Camilla.

gandalf,

the real filming location for SB is 2900-2910 Griffith Park Blvd (the yellow road just west of silver lake in the above map...see the web site). therefore you see 2904 and 2910. they believe 12 and 17 were fiictious as well, since #17 is 2910. i will stop by to confirm when i have time.

2590 as a fictitious address is correct.

regarding 1612, some theory has it that 12 and 16 are the switched apartments. similar to what you think, i also believe havenhurst represents an idealized location visualized by diane (see her appreciating look when looking at the kitcher at first time, and compare the kitchen with hers at SB). i think 1612 is fake both inside the film and outside the film. it only exists in the diane's dream. that is why the camnera stopped when rita reached sunset, because diane didnt know what the road to 1612 looks like and skipped through to her idealized apartment in the dream.

p.s. see this thread for the lay-out and street #s
